{mosgoogle}Video games have come a long way from Duck Hunt. The graphics are better, the plots are more adventurous, and the situations are more challenging. We also finally rid ourselves of that Duck Hunt laughing dog, perhaps the greatest perk. However, a benefit even greater than losing the pooch, is this new age of video games also aid in education.

Unlike Duck Hunt or Mario Brothers, which only allowed gamers to follow one path and were basically entertaining distractions, new video games incorporate elaborate situations that are more challenging and therefore more rewarding. Many skills needed to be a successful gamer are in the backbone of becoming a successful student such as exploring creativity, following instructions, and multitasking.

Success in nearly any classroom requires a student's ability to visualize materials and use their minds to elaborate on various situations. These skills are seen in video games, as a gamer takes on active roles, which cause a surge in creativity. They must decide their course, avoid obstacles, outwit villains, and dedicate themselves to situations. Also, following instructions, understanding demonstrations, and multitasking are all crucial elements to successful gaming, which are obvious skills needed in a classroom as well. Video games also give gamers a set goal to strive for, just like in the classroom. As a gamer learns dedication while attempting to beat a level, a student utilizes this dedication while studying for a test.

But, what about those violent games where the gamer plays as a villain, such as Grand Theft Auto? Well, in that case the gamer is able to explore a fantasy through role playing, while never breaking any actual laws. This heightens brain activity and imagination while allowing a gamer to explore identities. These types of games are usually the most elaborate and in turn, the format allows players to create their own path, as there are multiple solutions to the challenges of the game. In short, video games teach a gamer to tackle difficult tasks over an abundant amount of time, while staying constantly dedicated to a goal. Sounds a lot like the educational system, doesn't it? That's because new video games are mental exercise! No more Duck Hunt!
